Search Engine Webmaster Tools: Google, Bing, Yandex and Others
Search engines find sites on their own by following links, so you don’t have to “register” a site to be indexed. But each large search engine offers a free console for site owners, and verifying your site there is the closest thing to registering it:
| Search engine | Console | Where it matters most |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | worldwide | |
| Bing | Bing Webmaster Tools | worldwide; also feeds Copilot, DuckDuckGo, Yahoo and others |
| Yandex | Yandex Webmaster | Russia, Türkiye and neighbouring countries |
| Baidu | Baidu Search Resource Platform | China |
| Naver | Naver Search Advisor | South Korea |
Why it matters
A console shows what you can’t see from outside:
- which pages are indexed, and why others aren’t;
- the searches people find you with, with clicks and positions;
- crawl errors, security issues and manual actions;
- a place to submit your XML sitemap and request a recrawl of a changed page.
Without one, problems like an accidental noindex or a broken sitemap can go unnoticed for weeks.
Bing deserves a separate mention: its index also powers Microsoft Copilot and several other search
services, and Bing Webmaster Tools can import a verified Google Search Console property in a few
clicks.
What we check
We look for the markers each console uses to verify a site:
- verification
<meta>tags in the page (google-site-verification,msvalidate.01for Bing,yandex-verification,baidu-site-verification,naver-site-verification); - verification TXT records on the domain (Google, Yandex, Baidu, Naver).
| Result | When |
|---|---|
| Pass | at least one verification is found |
| Info | none is found |
Some verification methods can’t be seen from outside: an uploaded HTML file, Bing’s CNAME record, or verification through Google Analytics or Tag Manager. A site verified that way shows as “none found” even though it is set up, so read an “Info” result as “not visible”, not “not verified”. A verification also doesn’t prove that pages are indexed; the console itself tells you that. This check informs; it doesn’t change the SEO score.
How to set it up
- Google Search Console. Add a Domain property and verify it with the DNS TXT record
Google gives you: it covers
http,https,wwwand every subdomain at once. Submit your sitemap under Sitemaps. - Bing Webmaster Tools. Sign in and choose Import from Google Search Console, or verify with
the
msvalidate.01meta tag or a CNAME record. Submit the sitemap there too. - Regional engines. If you have visitors from Russia or Türkiye, add Yandex Webmaster; for China, Baidu; for South Korea, Naver.
- Keep the verification in place. Removing the tag or DNS record later can un-verify the site.
To tell Bing, Yandex and other participating engines about new and changed pages within minutes, look at IndexNow, a free protocol many CMSs and CDNs support with a plugin or a switch.
