What the Open Graph Preview checks

When someone pastes your link into a chat app or social network, the app fetches the page and builds a preview card from its Open Graph tags: og:title, og:description, og:image and og:url. X (formerly Twitter) reads its own twitter:card tags and falls back to Open Graph for the rest.

This tool reads those tags from the URL you enter and reports which are present, missing or inconsistent, for example an og:url that does not match the canonical URL. It draws a preview of the shared link card and of a Google search result built from your title, meta description and favicon, so you can see what people will see before you post.

Why it matters

Links without these tags often show a bare URL, a random image from the page or a truncated description, and that is exactly when people decide whether to click. A clear image and a specific title make the shared link look intentional and trustworthy.

Inconsistent tags cause quieter problems. An og:url pointing at a different address can split share counts and comments between URLs, and an og:image given as a relative path or on a server that blocks bots simply will not load in previews. Our Open Graph guide explains each tag.

How to fix common problems

Add the four core tags to every page template, generated from the page’s own data: <meta property="og:title" content="...">, og:description, og:image and og:url, plus og:type and og:site_name. Use absolute HTTPS URLs for the image and the page.

Use an image of 1200 by 630 pixels (a 1.91:1 ratio), keep important text away from the edges because some apps crop it, and keep the file reasonably small. Add <meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image"> for a large card on X.

Keep og:title close to your title tag and og:description close to your meta description, so search and social tell the same story. Platforms cache previews; after fixing tags, use the platform’s own debugging tool to refresh. The full PerfoMetrix audit checks these tags together with 170+ performance, security and SEO checks.

Questions

Why does my old image still appear when I share the link?

Social platforms and chat apps cache previews, sometimes for days. Use the platform's debugging or inspection tool to request a fresh scrape, or change the image URL.

Do I need separate Twitter tags?

Only twitter:card is needed for the large image card. X falls back to og:title, og:description and og:image when the twitter: versions are missing.

Is the Google preview exactly what Google will show?

It is an approximation built from your title, description and favicon. Google may rewrite titles and snippets based on the query.
